Since its release back in 2010, Deloitte’s annual Tech Trends report has detailed the rapid pace of technology innovation and the disruption that comes with it. Each year, we examine these trends from a government perspective to identify where their potential impacts lie.  Two trends that align with NASCIO’s 2019 Top Ten Policy and Tech Priorities as well as Tech Trends’ 2019 list are DevSecOps and the cyber imperative, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)- fueled organizations.

Where is the synergy? Let’s explore where we see potential impact over the coming months and years.

DevSecOps and the cyber imperative

In the Top Ten Policy and Tech Priorities for 2019, state CIOs identified security and risk management as the top priority in strategic planning for their enterprises. Adopting DevSecOps principles helps organizations transform cyber and risk management from a compliance-based approaches into engineering approaches. This creates essential, framing mindsets to help ensure that cyber principles are embedded in the DNA of a system’s design.

In the federal government, agencies like the Food and Drug Administration are working to standardize, automate and virtualize processes using small, agile teams to integrate development, security and operations.

AI-Fueled organizations

Also on the priority list for state CIOs is data management and analytics, the building blocks for embedding artificial intelligence or AI into your organization. In a world that’s more digital than ever before, AI is becoming an enabling tool for innovation and vital to organizational success. Agencies that harness AI’s potential can benefit from more data-driven decisions and empower employees with improved decision-making insights.

Finding a place for AI that supports the mission is key to realizing its potential.  For instance, in case management processing, AI can triage and automatically approve standard cases, enabling staff to focus on more complex cases and higher-value activities that support mission goals.

The opportunities for emerging technologies are continually growing, and we are seeing adoption throughout state government.  To succeed, don’t skip the upfront work:  define a strategy that ensures initiatives align with the organization’s mission and create adoption plans for changes to processes and people.
