Key Takeaway: States Continue Evaluating Changes to Health Exchanges

Nevada announced it will be jettisoning its current exchange and will utilize Healthcare.gov during the next open enrollment, which begins November 15. The state plans to consider setting up a new state exchange in 2015.  


Nevada joins a handful of states that hopes to be working off different health exchange technology by the end of the year. Oregon is shifting to the federal exchange, and Massachusetts and Maryland are eyeing significant remediation by adopting technology utilized by other states.


The Government Accountability Office (GAO), an independent federal investigative agency, has promised Congress several examinations on the federal and state exchanges.


Other Buzz: FCC Chair Testifies in House Federal Communications Chairman (FCC) Tom Wheeler received sharp questions from both sides of the aisle on Tuesday as he testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.


Wheeler expressed optimism that the Commission would be able to meet the FirstNet public safety broadband network's $7 billion in funding via spectrum auctions in the near-term. He also highlighted the FCC’s work their work with carriers to ensure texts could be delivered to 911 answering points. Among the hot-button issues covered were net neutrality, rules surrounding upcoming spectrum auctions, and reforms for the Commission. The wide-ranging discussion also touched on the Connect America Fund’s future and the E-rate broadband for schools and libraries program.
