  1. Secure Elections Act delayed  Markup for the Secure Elections Act (S. 2593) was scheduled for August 22 but was postponed after several secretaries of state voiced concern with the bill, noting the lack of funding and the White House also commented on the stalled measure saying they would not support legislation with "inappropriate mandates" that moves power or funding from states to Washington. 
  2. State plans for election security spending released  The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) released information on how states are planning to spend the $380 million in HAVA grants awarded earlier this year. 36.3 percent of funds will be spent by 41 states to improve election cybersecurity and those not investing in cyber will use their funds to replace voting equipment.   3. New leadership at FirstNet  FirstNet CEO Mike Poth will be stepping down this month after close to three years as CEO. Additionally, veteran FirstNet board member Ed Horowitz was named as the new chairman to replace Sue Swenson. Horowitz was the founder and chairman of a venture capital firm and will serve as chair for a two-year term. 

  4. House passes CDM bill  The Advancing Cybersecurity Diagnostics and Mitigation Act (HR 6443) passed the House on September 4. The bill would require federal agencies to: develop capabilities to analyze cyber risk, assist federal entities in setting security cybersecurity priorities and managing risk, and develop policies and procedures for reporting cyber risk among other items.
