Watch on Washington Top 5- July 2018

  1. NASCIO in the House NASCIO President Bo Reese testified before the House Oversight, Intergovernmental Subcommittee on July 18th about the impact of federal regulations on state IT. Reese spoke about the federal regulatory impact to IT consolidation and cybersecurity. Click here to read the testimony.
  2. FirstNet undergoing audit The U.S. Dept. of Commerce Inspector General notified FirstNet CEO Mike Poth on May 3rd that they would be initiating an audit of FirstNet's oversight role regarding the contract to develop the nationwide public safety broadband network.

  3. LA-RICS assets to AT&T LTE sites built by the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System (LA-RICS) were transferred to AT&T at the end of June. The transfer agreement was made in December 2017 and AT&T will pay $6 million for existing assets, $6 million for network expansion (26 additional sites), and $2.5 million in services.   4. Senators want to encourage small cell siting Sens. Thune (R-SD) and Schatz (D-HI) are co-sponsoring S. 3157 which seeks to streamline the siting process for small cell deployments. The bill would require state and local officials to act on permit applications within 60 or 90 days depending on the type of attachment. The National Conference of State Legislatures has voiced skepticism for S. 3157 saying it would dilute state authority.  

  5. NGA and NASBO meetings The National Governors Association (NGA) will be hosting its summer meeting in Santa Fe, NM July 19-21, 2018 and the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) will be hosting its annual meeting in Oklahoma City, OK July 22-25. NGA's meeting will feature international guests from China, Japan, Kenya and more. NASCIO President Bo Reese will speak about IT consolidation at NASBO's meeting.
