U.S. Department of Justice grant program applications start rolling in

Deltek Analyst Evan Halperin reports.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) have been accepting applications from state, local and tribal agencies for a variety of grant programs to assist in the implementation of many software, hardware, training and personnel projects. The application period for many of these fiscal year 2013 (FY 13) grants closed as of this week, though some remain open until early June.

It is too soon to know exactly how much grant funding will be available; however, recommended funding levels will be the same as FY 12 for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), with $370 million. The recommended total is based on President Obama’s FY 13 budget request and not yet final. Regardless of the finalized funding level, it is likely to remain significantly lower than years prior to FY 12, when funding was more than $500 million. With state budgets still ailing from the recession, many agencies will be shut out of funding that is desperately needed to complete projects.
