Key Takeaway:

They’re Ba-ack... The kids are off to school and Congress is back in D.C.! That means we're back to the regular Washington Headlines and Tech (WHAT) updates. The question of what our Representatives and Senators learned over their summer vacation and how it will shape the legislative session is still to be determined. Expect budget battles to suck up a lot of oxygen, but pressing tech issues impacting states such as cybersecurity and the implementation of the Health Insurance Exchanges will continue to pop-up.  More on those items below...

Other Buzz:

NIST Releases Draft Cyber Framework

On August 28, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) released a “discussion draft” of the cybersecurity framework (available here).  NIST hopes they will receive substantive feedback from stakeholders. The creation of the framework, required as part of the President’s Executive Order, will provide organizations with a common means for analyzing and managing cyber risk.  NASCIO  is currently reviewing the framework.

Health Insurance Exchange Oversight

On Wednesday, the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies held a hearing on the federal data hub and its security.  Among the issues discussed was the readiness and security of the hub, as well as the role of ‘navigators’ in signing up citizens and their access to sensitive information on citizens. CMS and others assured Congress its certified, secure, and ready to go.  Written testimony and video of the hearing are available on the House Homeland website.

We hope readers on the east coast were able to see NASA’s rocket take off this week, but we bet you didn’t get as good a view as this (poor) frog. Feel free to reach out with your questions, and thoughts on FirstNet through the NASCIO Community or e-mail me directly at mherckis@amrms.com, or my partner in crime and clips, Samantha Wenger (swenger@amrms.com)--and thanks for reading.
