This Week: Cyber Info and Deadlines, Broadband Map Gets a Lifeline, and More...

Like many of you, we're ready for booms, BBQs, beers, and parades--but apparently there’s some Washington Headlines And Tech (WHAT) news to pay attention to first.  Drop us a line at mherckis@amrms.com and swenger@amrms.com with good BBQ recipes--or tech stuff we might have missed while drooling over BBQ recipes.  Here’s to Uncle Sam...

Key Takeaway:
NIST Requests Info on Computer Security Incident Coordination: Last week, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) announced it plans to release a publication to help Computer Security Incident Response Teams coordinate when incidents occur.  The RFI is looking to identify best practices and impediments to information sharing and response, standards and technology that have been helpful, and a host of related info.  Learn more here.  Responses are due July 29.

Other Buzz:
FCC Takes Over Broadband Map: With funding scheduled to end next year for NTIA’s production of the National Broadband Map, the FCC unanimously voted last Thursday to carry the torch. The FCC will not only collect data on subscriptions and customers, but also information on deployment. The FCC has no immediate plans to add broadband pricing to the data it collects from providers.

More Cyber EO Deadlines For Feds: July 12 marks the 150-day set of deadlines for the cybersecurity Executive Order.  Of particular interest will be the preliminary list of cyber critical infrastructure (CI) “at greatest risk.”  This infrastructure would cause “catastrophic” harm to the nation if compromised by a cyber attack, and may ultimately receive some level of federal regulation.  As only the White House has seen the deliverables from 30 days ago, we may have to wait a while to review (if the list isn’t classified to begin with).
