Enterprises
are searching for better ways to manage and secure the online
identities of employees and customers but does that necessitate a Chief
Identity Officer? An international corporation recently posted the job
listing, which then brought up the debate of whether the position was
necessary and a blog post from Dave Kearns at KuppingerCole Analysts.
The company was looking for someone to focus on the internal identity
issues at the corporation. It doesn’t seem that the position is a
popular one as of yet, with one company boasting a “CidO.” IdentityMind
appointed an individual to the position but it was more outward looking
than concerned with internal identity issues.
Kearns’ research turned up some other researching on the topic but
nobody really doing the job. He reached out to some in the field to get
their current take on the possible position.
Matt Pollicove, with Commercium Technology,
started the conversation because he wanted to make identity management a
bigger part of the enterprise so that it has greater visibility and was
taken more seriously.
Matt Flynn, from Oracle,
says a director of identity who reports to the Chief Information officer
position should be created. “A director of IdM … would need to find
solutions that enable the business, facilitate ease-of-use and also
maintain strict security guidelines. IdM solutions span the enterprise
and the design, architecture and management thereof ought to be
central.”
The position may not have to be a ”C” level title but more of a focus
on identity issues — internal and external — could help enterprises
avoid some of the breaches and other issues that are plaguing
organizations.
