Weekly WHAT: Blizzard Edition

It’s been a busy few weeks for us at NASCIO – we’ve released our 2016 advocacy priorities, hosted a briefing for strategic partners, and traveled to several states to speak about cybersecurity.

Washington, D.C. is also a flurry of activity – we just weathered a record-setting blizzard (30 inches here in Baltimore) which has shut down all federal agencies today.

Hon. Beth Cobert new OPM Director?

Next week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will consider the nomination of Hon. Beth Cobert, deputy director at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) who was tapped for the acting director position at OPM. The Senate HSGAC committee will consider her nomination on Feb. 4, details will be posted here

FTC focuses efforts on identity theft, tax ID theft during Tax ID Theft awareness week (Jan 25-29)

Update: press conference delayed until further notice due to weather Tomorrow afternoon, the FTC will be hosting a press conference where it is reported to unveil a “major step forward in efforts to help victims of identity theft recover from this pernicious crime.” This week is also Tax Identity Theft Awareness week at the agency and events like a “Webinar for Consumers on Tax Identity Theft” and several twitter chats will be hosted on the issue; click here for a full list of events.

Data privacy day – Thursday, Jan. 28 2016

On Thursday, NASCIO and its cybersecurity partners will celebrate Data Privacy Day (DPD), a day that celebrates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty related to privacy and data protection. The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) is the organizing entity for DPD, in charge of the outreach, awareness and education efforts. FirstNet releases RFP

On January 13, FirstNet released its final RFP that seeks industry solutions to the deployment, construction, and maintenance of the National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN). The RFP marks a significant milestone in FirstNet’s buildup to the buildout; click here to read the RFP. The winning bid must meet sixteen objectives, which includes cybersecurity. Questions about the RFP are due February 12 and proposals are due April 29, 2016. 

In sum, FirstNet is seeking a single solutions provider who is expected to partner with several telecommunications providers, including rural providers. Coverage requirements are broken up in a timeline fashion and categorized into Initial Operating Capability (IOC) and Final Operating Capability (FOC); click here to view the document.

NASCIO Releases 2016 Advocacy Priorities

On January 12, NASCIO released four federal advocacy priorities on which the association will focus its work in 2016. The four advocacy priorities are: cybersecurity, NPSBN (FirstNet), flexibility in federal regulations and information sharing.
